Funding Our Trip

Some chose to work as they travel to cover their expenses, however, we were sold on the idea of a 12 month holiday and wanted to save enough money to not have to worry about working. That meant that we worked long and hard and saved every dollar that we could for years before we had enough to leave.
We planned (and procrastinated) for our trip for a good 2-3 years before we actually left. This gave us plenty of time to save some funds and get set up with all the gear we needed to hit the road. This included some modifications to our 4WD, additions to our camper trailer (such as a boat rack) and just all the other bits and pieces that we thought we may need.
We budgeted on $45,000 for 12 months, which was roughly $900 a week. As we were only renting prior to leaving, we didn’t have any mortgage payments to worry about and left when our tenant lease was up.

We have heard that a lot of other families spend a lot less per week and some spend much more, but this works for us. This is our once in a lifetime trip, so we wanted to ensure we had enough to do some tours and just have a bloody good time.
We quit our jobs, sold all our stuff, packed up our camper and waved goodbye to our family and friends. It was to date to scariest thing we have ever done. It is such a big risk to leave and have no house or job to come back to, but as queen Oprah Winfrey says:
“The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams.”
